Gucci celebrates six decades of heritage in Japan with a captivating exhibition dedicated to the iconic Bamboo bag. Entitled Bamboo 1947: Then and Now, the show is currently on display at the Gucci Ginza Gallery in Tokyo. Running from August 2nd to September 23rd, 2024, the exhibition delves deep into the history and evolution of the bag, presenting a blend of tradition and contemporary artistry.

The show is spread over two floors, each dedicated to a different aspect of the iconic bag. The sixth floor features a chronological display of the bag’s evolution, with archival pieces dating back to 1959 and contemporary designs by Creative Director Sabato De Sarno. This section offers a comprehensive look at the evolution of the bag and its enduring appeal over the decades.

On the seventh floor, visitors can explore a special collection of 60 vintage Bamboo 1947 bags, each reimagined by renowned Japanese craftsmen and contemporary artists. These artists include goldsmith Morihito Katsura, ceramist Nakazato Hirotsune, lacquerer Ai Tokeshi, photographer Daido Moriyama and painters Nami Yokoyama and Yui Yaegashi. Each artist brings a unique perspective that transforms the iconic bags into true works of art.

The exhibition highlights the innovative spirit and craftsmanship that define Gucci, weaving a story of tradition and modernity. It celebrates Gucci’s deep ties to Japanese craftsmanship and underlines the brand’s ongoing commitment to creative collaboration and cultural exchange.
