The Mount Nelson in Cape Town is currently hosting the third annual Confections x Collections (CxC) event, running through November 9th, 2024, in celebration of African slow fashion. This year’s edition, coinciding with the hotel’s 125th anniversary, brings an added historic dimension to the event, which is organized by Twyg, an independent fashion and sustainability publication. Throughout CxC, the iconic Mount Nelson’s lounge, terrace, and garden have transformed into intimate spaces for salon-style shows, presenting the work of some of Africa’s most talented designers.
Each day spotlights a different designer, each bringing unique visions rooted in African heritage. South Africa’s LVMH and Amiri Prize winner Lukhanyo Mdingi showcases artisanal techniques with a modern flair, while Rich Mnisi brings a vibrant interpretation of Tsonga culture. Nigerian designers are also prominently featured, with Bubu Ogisi of IAMISIGO exploring traditional textiles, and Adeju Thompson of Lagos Space Programme presenting a Woolmark Prize-winning collection inspired by Yoruba culture.
On November 9th, CxC will conclude with a group show featuring past and present designers, including VIVIERS Studio, CHULAAP, and MAXHOSA AFRICA. Attendees can enjoy an exclusive Afternoon Tea, with confections inspired by each collection crafted by pastry chef Vicky Gurovich, and a special rooibos tea blend by Mingwei Tsai, celebrating South African botanicals. Guests can also view pieces from the CxC collections at the AKJP concept store on Kloof Street, offering a chance to explore the designs in more depth.
Open to the public, CxC 2024 offers a vibrant, immersive experience that honors Mount Nelson’s legacy while showcasing the future of sustainable design in Africa.
