Tangible Ideas

The exhibition HEAVE by British Caribbean artist and designer Samuel Ross will be on view at the SCAD Museum of Art from January 24th to July 6th, 2025. Known for his innovative approach to materiality and design, Ross presents a multidisciplinary showcase spanning fashion, painting, and furniture design, all infused with his signature industrial aesthetic.

The exhibition features two rarely seen abstract paintings by Ross, along with sculptural seating that explores the fusion of Eurocentric Modernist forms and West African design traditions. Also on display are four hand-painted utility jackets that blend functional design with Ross’s intuitive mark-making. Accompanying these works are process sketches, offering insights into the artist’s creative exploration across multiple disciplines.

As part of SCAD deFINE ART 2025, Ross will join artist Ken Gun Min for a dual artist talk on February 24. Ross will discuss the material investigations and Brutalist influences behind HEAVE, while Min will explore themes of identity and idealism in his embroidered “queer utopia” paintings.

Read our conversation with Dr. Samuel Ross as he delves into the intersection of design and poetry, the debut of his latest book, and his vision for his new studio.
