The 2025 Golden Lions recognize Donna Haraway and Italo Rota

The winners of the 2025 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale have been announced, recognizing two monumental figures in the worlds of philosophy and architecture. American philosopher Donna Haraway has received the prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement for her groundbreaking work across science studies, feminist theory, anthropology, and the philosophy of technology. Haraway is known for her conceptualization of the Chthulucene, a term she introduced to challenge the Anthropocene and advocate for the urgent need for interspecies symbiosis. Her writings, including Staying with the Trouble and The Companion Species Manifesto, have influenced fields far beyond philosophy, offering new perspectives for architects and designers facing ecological and technological challenges.

In a posthumous tribute, Italian architect Italo Rota has been honored with the Special Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Memoriam. Rota, celebrated for his innovative and poetic contributions to architecture and design, left an indelible mark with projects such as the interior design of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the Museo del Novecento in Milan. Known for his ability to cross styles and disciplines, Rota was deeply invested in integrating nature, science, and technology into his work. His legacy will be celebrated at the 2025 Biennale through the exhibition Material Bank: Matters Make Sense, which will reflect his innovative approach and vision. Both of these esteemed figures will be commemorated at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, running from May 10th to November 23rd, 2025, in Venice.
