Design Within Reach has teamed up with British designer Paul Smith to furnish the iconic Miles C Bates Wave House in Palm Desert, now available as a vacation rental. Built in 1955 by architect Walter S White, the home—known for its undulating roof and mountain-inspired lines—has been restored and reimagined as part of DWR Presents: The Paul Smith Collection. The collaboration blends classic mid-century design with Smith’s signature flair for color and pattern.

Each room features iconic furniture pieces by Herman Miller and Knoll, reupholstered in Paul Smith + Maharam textiles that reflect the desert’s hues. Striped loungers, patterned sofas, and graphic bed linens infuse the historic interior with playful elegance. The house’s natural materials—wooden slats, glazed walls, and brick partitions—complement the collection’s vibrant palette. DWR’s creative director Omar Nobil called the Wave House the perfect setting for the launch, citing its bold architecture and harmony with the collection’s ethos.

Coinciding with Modernism Week in nearby Palm Springs, DWR also opened a new store to celebrate the collaboration. Guests can not only stay in the home but also shop the furniture directly through DWR. The project highlights Smith’s long-standing love of design and his ability to elevate everyday objects into moments of visual delight.
