Architect Tadao Ando designs the new Dubai Museum of Art

The celebrated architect Tadao Ando will bring his distinctive vision to Dubai with the newly announced Dubai Museum of Art (DUMA), a landmark project unveiled by the Al-Futtaim Group. Rising from an artificial jetty in Dubai Creek, the museum is set to become a defining symbol of the city’s architectural and cultural ambitions. The design reflects Ando’s signature philosophy — a dialogue between light, water, and concrete — transforming the site into both a contemplative space and a global cultural hub.

A museum design concept rooted in simplicity and reflection

The museum design concept centers on harmony between built form and natural surroundings. True to Ando’s minimalist aesthetic, the structure combines geometric precision with poetic serenity. The building’s circular and linear forms are designed to interact with the shifting reflections of the creek, creating a seamless connection between the museum’s interior and its aquatic landscape. Inside, the museum will host exhibition galleries, a library, study rooms, and a restaurant, all arranged to encourage quiet exploration and intellectual engagement.

Among the planned highlights are immersive exhibition spaces that adapt to light and shadow, echoing Ando’s long-standing exploration of spiritual calm through material restraint. Visitors will move through corridors where filtered sunlight softens the concrete textures, evoking a sense of transcendence — a design approach that has defined Ando’s work from the Church of Light in Osaka to the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis.

A cultural hub for Dubai’s global vision

The cultural hub will serve as a platform for artistic exchange, situating Dubai firmly within the global art and design network. At the unveiling, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum emphasized that the new museum embodies the UAE’s vision to position Dubai as a world capital for creativity and cultural innovation.

Omar Al Futtaim, vice chairman and CEO of the Al-Futtaim Group, stated that the project reflects a commitment to excellence, sustainability, and the enduring power of art in shaping inclusive progress. The museum will not only house international and regional exhibitions but also nurture local talent, providing a bridge between tradition and modernity.

When completed, the Dubai Museum of Art promises to be more than an architectural landmark — it will be a space where design, heritage, and imagination converge. Through the lens of architect Tadao Ando, Dubai gains a new symbol of quiet strength and artistic clarity, a structure destined to inspire generations to come.
