MoMA Market turns grocery shopping into a design spectacle in New York

This winter, New York’s design scene gets a playful twist as MoMA Mart’s faux food pop-up opens its doors, reimagining the supermarket as a space for visual wit and collectible objects. Presented by the MoMA Design Store, the limited-time pop-up invites visitors to browse shelves filled not with food, but with design pieces that look deliciously familiar.

Running from January 7th through March 29th, 2026, MoMA Mart takes place at both MoMA Design Store locations in SoHo (81 Spring Street) and Midtown (44 West 53rd Street), with a parallel online offering for those shopping from afar.

MoMA Design Store rethinks the grocery aisle

Rather than recreating a traditional market, the MoMA Design Store plays with its structure and visual language. At first glance, the space resembles a neighborhood grocery, but a closer look reveals that nothing here is edible. Everyday food shapes become the starting point for functional design, turning routine shopping into a visual prank rooted in art and humor.

The concept draws on a long tradition of artists and designers using food as form, from modernist still lifes to Pop Art’s fascination with mass consumption. The references remain subtle, allowing the experience to feel intuitive and light rather than academic.

MoMA Design Store highlights: from tomato lamps to pizza clocks

Among the standout items at MoMA Market are a tomato-shaped table lamp, clocks inspired by pizza slices and sandwiches, beeswax candles resembling fresh produce, and vases styled like market finds. Stools, sculptural décor, and table accessories continue the trompe-l’œil effect, blurring the line between object and illusion.

Many of the pieces are exclusive to the MoMA Design Store, reinforcing the pop-up’s collectible appeal. As with all Design Store initiatives, proceeds support the Museum of Modern Art and its programming, making this tongue-in-cheek shopping experience both playful and purposeful.

MoMA Mart ultimately transforms the simple act of browsing into a moment of surprise, inviting visitors to feast with their eyes and take home a piece of design that feels at once absurd, refined, and unmistakably MoMA.
