Craft as Language: Galerie du 19M heads to Shanghai to present Métiers d’art to a new audience

From September 25th to November 15th, 2026, the Galerie du 19M will bring its signature celebration of craftsmanship to the Museum of Art Pudong, marking a significant international milestone for the Paris-founded platform. Grounded in the principles of Métiers d’art, this project fosters a cross-cultural dialogue between French heritage and China’s contemporary creative landscape.

Located in the heart of Shanghai, the exhibition will take visitors on a sensory journey through traditional know-how and modern experimentation, connecting generations, disciplines and geographies.

Métiers d’art: a dialogue between France and China

At its core, the exhibition explores the living legacy of Métiers d’art, showcasing the techniques and artistry of le19M’s Maisons d’art, which were founded by Chanel in 2021. Spanning the entire third floor of the museum, the exhibition will unfold as a dynamic narrative of craftsmanship, innovation, and tradition.

Curated by prominent figures such as Gong Yan, Lin Tianmiao, Zhang Lei and Christelle Kocher, this group exhibition unites Chinese and French artists and artisans who are united by a shared vision of redefining craftsmanship across cultures.

A particular highlight is the Lesage centenary retrospective, which traces a century of embroidery and textile innovation — from the company’s foundation in 1924 to its current collaborations with Chanel — revealing how heritage evolves through experimentation and dialogue.

A programme of talks, workshops and interactive sessions further enriches the experience, positioning craftsmanship as a universal language that connects the past with the present, Paris with Shanghai, and tradition with reinvention.
