Wilmotte & Associés unveiled their conceptual and visionary design for the Centre Pompidou Hanwha

The new Centre Pompidou Hanwha, which has been designed by Wilmotte & Associés, is set to be opened on June 4th, 2026 in Seoul’s financial district. This event is being marked as a major cultural milestone between France and South Korea. Reimagined as a box of light, the museum introduces a new architectural language defined by openness, transparency and urban connection.

The architecture serves as a luminous bridge between Paris and Seoul

The building is defined by its signature translucent glass façade: a double-glazed envelope which filters daylight during the day and transforms the structure into a glowing urban landmark at night. The museum occupies a reworked annex of Seoul’s iconic 63 Building on Yeouido Island, spanning approximately 11,000 square metres and turning a former aquarium space into a contemporary cultural destination.

The gently curved panels of the façade reference traditional Korean roof tiles, creating a subtle dialogue between local heritage and modern design. At night, the building becomes a horizontal beacon, visible from the Han River and reinforcing its role as both a museum and an urban landmark within the city skyline.

A ‘box of light’ for contemporary culture

Spanning four levels, the Centre Pompidou Hanwha features two expansive 1,500-square-metre exhibition galleries. One of these galleries is dedicated to rotating presentations from the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, which reinforces the Centre Pompidou’s role as a satellite during its major renovation period.

The centre’s programme extends beyond exhibitions to incorporate educational spaces designed for younger audiences and initiatives that encourage public engagement with contemporary art. At ground level, a serene sculpture garden introduces a quieter architectural rhythm, offering a moment of pause within Seoul’s fast-moving financial district.

As a forward-looking cultural platform, Centre Pompidou Hanwha reflects a shared Franco-Korean vision of innovation, where architecture becomes both container and experience and light itself is treated as a curatorial material.
