‘Azzedine Alaïa: Sculpting Fashion’ brings the couturier’s timeless vision to San Francisco

Nearly a decade after his death, Azzedine Alaïa will be honored with his first major U.S. retrospective. Opening at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco from November 21st, 2026, to April 11th, 2027, the exhibition stands among the year’s most significant haute couture events.

Titled Azzedine Alaïa: Sculpting Fashion, the exhibition is curated by Laura L. Camerlengo of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and Olivier Saillard, director of the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa. Organized with the Paris-based foundation, it examines the designer’s creative process, technical brilliance, and enduring dialogue between fashion and sculpture.

Born in Tunisia and originally trained as a sculptor, Alaïa reshaped modern fashion with garments that celebrated the female body through precision, impeccable craftsmanship, and an uncompromising independent spirit. His refusal to follow the conventional fashion calendar cemented his place among the industry’s most influential designers.

Eighty iconic creations and rare historical inspirations

The retrospective features around 80 garments spanning Alaïa’s career, charting the evolution of his unmistakable aesthetic from the 1980s onward. Complementing these works are pieces from the couturier’s private historical collection—presented in the United States for the first time—including creations by legendary designers who influenced his approach to construction and form.

Highlights include Alaïa’s signature body-conscious dresses, sculptural tailoring, and precisely engineered silhouettes, alongside designs famously worn by Tina Turner, Grace Jones, and Rihanna, underscoring his lasting impact on fashion and popular culture.

A dialogue Between Fashion, Art, and Cultural Heritage

Extending across the Legion of Honor’s special exhibition spaces and European art galleries, Azzedine Alaïa: Sculpting Fashion places couture alongside masterpieces of painting and sculpture, reflecting the designer’s conviction that fashion belongs within the broader history of art.

The exhibition also celebrates Alaïa as a passionate collector, presenting selections from his personal archive of historic dress that illuminate the inspirations behind his mastery of proportion, construction, and silhouette.
