Alternative visions of AI

The exhibition What Models Make Worlds: Critical Imaginaries of AI is on view at the Ford Foundation Gallery until 9 December 2023. Featuring the work of over 15 artists exploring the potential and limitations of AI, the project examines the complexities of this technology and imagines more inclusive and expansive models. Recognising that AI is not free from the biases inherited from its human creators, the exhibition raises important questions about fairness and justice in the digitally transformed future that lies ahead.

Algorithmic models in computer science anticipate and illustrate possible futures. These models are part of our current reality, a representation of a world with significant power imbalances. However, the act of creating algorithmic worlds is often hidden in a black box where automated decisions are made without transparency. In What Models Make Worlds: Critical Imaginaries of AI, the featured artists reveal this hidden process and explore alternative visions of AI that incorporate feminist, anti-racist and decolonial perspectives.
