Gaby Aghion's Chloé Legacy

Gaby Aghion’s Chloé Legacy

The Jewish Museum of New York presents Mood of the Moment: Gaby Aghion and the House of Chloé, a landmark exhibition honoring Gaby Aghion (1921-2014), the founder of Chloé. It spans Chloé’s 70-year history with 150 garments, unseen sketches and documents from the Chloé archives. Aghion’s vision of effortless, luxurious fashion is highlighted alongside influential designers such as Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney. This exhibition highlights Aghion’s transformative role in the liberation of women’s fashion.

Born into a Jewish family in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1921, Gaby Aghion moved to Paris in 1945 with her husband Raymond Aghion and became immersed in the cultural scene of the Left Bank. When she founded Chloé in 1952, Aghion challenged the dominance of haute couture with original, modern and elegant clothes. She wanted to free women from rigid designs and sold her first dresses to boutiques, insisting on retaining the Chloé label.

The exhibition Mood of the Moment: Gaby Aghion and the House of Chloé runs through 18 February 2024. For more information, visit the Jewish Museum of New York website.
