The Triennale and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain celebrate the legacy of Alessandro Mendini. The retrospective I Am a Dragon: The True Story of Alessandro Mendini in the Cubo space, in collaboration with the Archivio Alessandro Mendini, pays tribute to his many contributions. The title of the exhibition is inspired by one of his most emblematic self-portraits, to underline his uniqueness in the world of design, architecture and art.
The exhibition illustrates Mendini’s transformative influence on 20th and 21st century thought and behaviour. Curated by Fulvio Irace and designed by Pierre Charpin, who has worked with Mendini on several occasions, the retrospective is being presented in collaboration with Elisa and Fulvia Mendini. With over 400 works from private and public collections, the project explores Mendini’s self-portraits, his architectural endeavours and his empathy with everyday objects, all aimed at revealing the magic of the everyday.
The exhibition is divided into six thematic sections that present Alessandro Mendini’s various contributions. These include Identikit, with his self-portraits, La sindrome di Gulliver, with his large-scale objects, and Architetture, with his architectural projects around the world. In addition, Fragilismi explores his Fragilisme exhibition, Radical Melancholy delves into his radical design era, and Stanze features immersive spaces designed by Mendini.
The exhibition I Am a Dragon: The True Story of Alessandro Mendini runs from 16 April to 13 October 2024.
