All Mirrors

All Mirrors

Ying Gao introduces All Mirrors, a captivating new fashion collection that fuses robotics and artistry with garments featuring shards of kaleidoscopic mirrors. Created with medical cotton gauze finished in 18-carat gold, the fragmented mirrors are stitched into the fabric and animated using electronic components designed by Simon Laroche. Gao describes the mirrors as a metaphor for fractured realities, inspired by Umberto Eco’s idea that mirrors simultaneously reflect virtuality and reality, allowing viewers to see both what is and what they wish to see.

The designer explains that the robotic garments are activated by the viewer’s gaze, creating an interactive experience that questions how our image is shaped by others’ perceptions. The reflective surfaces, crafted from a fusion of glass and silicone, form a connection that’s both physical and introspective.

Drawing parallels to the Japanese art of kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold, Gao uses fragmented mirrors to symbolize imperfection and the beauty of reassembly.
