Beyond Fashion is currently on show at the Saatchi Gallery in London. The exhibition explores fashion photography’s transformative journey, showing how it has evolved from depicting products to reflecting our realities, exploring aspirations and pushing the boundaries of creativity. The project features work by renowned photographers including Nick Knight, Peter Lindbergh, Viviane Sassen and Paolo Roversi.
Visitors will see iconic images and works of famous faces and dynamic brands in contemporary culture. Highlights include classic VOGUE covers, the legs of Victoria Beckham in the shopping bag of Marc Jacobs and portraits of supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Christy Turlington.
Organised into four sections: Allure, Fantasy, Realism, and Surrealism, the exhibition will take visitors on a journey from the glamour of the studio to the grassroots of street photography. It is a documentation of the vast and diverse forms that fashion photography can take, and highlights its evolution into a respected art form.
Alongside over 100 photographs, the exhibition includes a section dedicated to moving images, demonstrating the importance of film in today’s fashion imagery. This includes work by SHOWstudio, founded by Nick Knight, one of the first high-profile image-makers to use digital film for fashion.
The exhibition concludes with an installation entitled Under Your Smell, in which students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne present a visual interpretation of Jean-Paul Gaultier’s perfumes through staged images. Curated by Nathalie Herschdorfer and produced by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Beyond Fashion runs until 8 September 2024.
