EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography returns for its 11th edition from March 1st to 31st, 2025, bringing together over 100 museums, galleries, and cultural institutions across Berlin. This year’s theme, What Stands Between Us, explores the fragility of democracy and the forces that divide and connect us through the lens of contemporary photography.
The festival’s centerpiece exhibition, What Stands Between Us. Photography as a Medium for Chronicling, opens on February 27th at the Akademie der Künste, the newly established festival center. Featuring works by 20 international artists, the exhibition reflects on political tensions, societal fractures, and the power of visual storytelling in times of crisis. The EMOP Opening Days (February 27th – March 2nd) will host artist talks, panel discussions, and a special awards ceremony, culminating in a grand opening party.
Among the standout exhibitions, FOTOGAGA. Max Ernst and Photography at the Museum of Photography examines the Surrealist artist’s experimental engagement with the medium, showcasing his playful self-portraits and groundbreaking collage techniques. Meanwhile, The Living City at the German Museum of Technology offers a dynamic exploration of urban landscapes as spaces of connection and division, illustrating the complexities of modern city life.
EMOP Berlin also spotlights emerging talents with the Young Scene program, where six renowned photography schools present innovative works by the next generation of artists. Additional highlights include Nothing Personal by Nikita Teryoshin at Koschmieder Gallery, an incisive look at the global arms trade through images captured at international defense expos, and Parallel Realities at Kommunale Galerie Berlin, featuring 30 artists whose works challenge perceptions of truth and fiction.
Throughout March, Berlin will transform into a hub of photographic discourse with film screenings, guided tours, and pop-up exhibitions. The European Month of Photography continues to serve as a vital platform for artistic exchange, reinforcing the role of photography in shaping our understanding of contemporary society.
