Es Devlin, the celebrated British artist and designer, is unveiling a captivating new installation, Library of Light, at Milan Design Week. Located in the historic Cortile d’Onore at the Pinacoteca di Brera, this monumental kinetic sculpture will be open to the public from April 7th to 21st, 2025. With over 2,000 books donated by Feltrinelli, the installation takes the form of a rotating cylindrical structure, symbolizing the flow of knowledge and connection.
During the day, mirrors reflect sunlight onto the surrounding columns and statues, illuminating spaces that have never before seen the light. At night, the glowing structure casts intricate shadows across the courtyard, creating an ethereal spectacle. Devlin’s work is inspired by Umberto Eco’s belief that “books are the compass of the mind,” reflecting her vision of libraries as vibrant spaces of intellectual energy. The installation also features a series of collective readings, with contributions from notable voices like Benedict Cumberbatch and Devlin herself, accompanied by a musical score. Visitors can explore the books and even contribute their own to expand the public archive. Library of Light invites all to witness the intersection of art, literature, and innovation in this immersive cultural experience.
