Exploring love and art: Inez & Vinoodh at Kunstmuseum Den Haag

From March 21st to September 6th, 2026, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag presents Can Love Be a Photograph, a major retrospective celebrating Inez & Vinoodh and their 40-year career at the forefront of fashion photography. This exhibition showcases the artists’ pioneering work in digital imaging, where the boundaries between art, fashion, and portraiture merge into a singular, visually striking vision.

Thematic galleries and artistic sections

Spanning 18 galleries, the exhibition is organised thematically rather than chronologically, reflecting the lifelong collaboration between Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Key sections include The Psychomorphic Phenomenon, which features seminal series from the early 90s that explore human emotion, perfection and intimacy in the digital age. The iconic motif “The Kiss” highlights the physical and emotional connection between the subjects, while the Me Kissing… series and the Think Love body of work explore connections across generations.

There are special galleries that celebrate their magazine and collage work, large prints, and portraits of famous people from around the world. These include Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, and Brad Pitt. A floral series bridges portraiture and still life, emphasising growth, potential, and energy.

Fashion photography at the intersection of art and commerce

For decades, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin have been creating high-profile campaigns for fashion houses like Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Chanel, transforming glossy fashion images into a kind of psychological allegory. Their fashion photography is both seductive and unsettling, highlighting the intersection of glamour, human desire, and culture, all the while maintaining an element of artistic experimentation.

Accompanying the show, the catalogue Can Love Be a Photograph – 40 Years of Inez & Vinoodh features essays by Francesco Bonami, Donatien Grau, Pamela Chen, and Willemijn van der Zwaan, alongside an intimate interview conducted by Tilda Swinton.
