From June 14 to 29, 2025, LA MUSEUM SHIBUYA hosts a groundbreaking fashion exhibition in central Tokyo, marking its second physical showcase. Titled LA MUSEUM SHIBUYA in Shibuya, the event offers a curated dive into five decades of fashion history—from the experimental 1970s to the early 2000s. This ambitious fashion exhibition is built around the museum’s expansive online archive of postwar design, brought to life through 50 iconic looks that shaped modern style.
At the heart of the LA MUSEUM SHIBUYA experience is a rare installation of 215 photographs by Maison Martin Margiela, originally presented at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2006 and now debuting in Japan. Alongside the photographs are Margiela’s early runway collections from 1989 to 1999, as well as original sketchbooks and video works that give an intimate view of the designer’s creative world.
The fashion exhibition also features pieces from Japanese fashion revolutionaries such as Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, and Issey Miyake, whose avant-garde visions pushed boundaries across the globe. In addition, designs by Vivienne Westwood, Malcolm McLaren, Helmut Lang, and the Antwerp Six reflect the rebellious and conceptual energy that defined the era.
A special slideshow by photographer Shoichi Aoki reinterprets Margiela’s 1990 Spring/Summer collection, presenting seven reimagined silhouettes that highlight the timeless impact of subversive design. Visitors can access the LA MUSEUM SHIBUYA experience through the official app, where entry to the full fashion exhibition is free of charge.
As director Hideo Hashiura explains, LA MUSEUM SHIBUYA is not just preserving fashion history—it’s reimagining how we connect with it. This fashion exhibition proves that clothing can be more than garments; it’s memory, rebellion, and art.
