Leica Leitzphone Powered by Xiaomi: a new era of mobile photography

At this year’s Mobile World Congress, the debut of the Leica Leitzphone Powered by Xiaomi marked a significant moment for mobile imaging. Designed as a smartphone for photographers, the device brings together Leica’s legendary photographic philosophy and Xiaomi’s advanced mobile technology, delivering a camera-centric experience in a sleek and refined phone design.

Developed through a close collaboration between Leica Camera AG and Xiaomi, the Leitzphone aims to translate the brand’s century-long commitment to precision and visual clarity into a contemporary smartphone format. The device is available now through Leica Stores and the official Leica website.

Smartphone for photographers

Conceived as a smartphone for photographers, the Leica Leitzphone places image-making at the heart of its functionality. The device is equipped with a powerful triple-camera system inspired by Leica’s optical expertise, including a main camera with a large 1-inch sensor and advanced LOFIC technology that enhances dynamic range.

A periscope telephoto lens with a 200-megapixel sensor enables optical zoom from 75 to 100mm, allowing for sharp portraits and detailed urban scenes. Leica has also developed the phone’s camera interface and image processing system, integrating thirteen Leica Looks that recreate the visual character of classic photographic film.

Among these modes is the Leica Essential Mode, which includes a colour profile inspired by the iconic Leica M9 as well as a monochrome aesthetic reminiscent of traditional Leica black-and-white film. Together, these tools encourage a slower, more deliberate photographic approach—even within the immediacy of a smartphone.

Phone design inspired by Leica heritage

The phone design reflects Leica’s minimalist design philosophy and its emphasis on tactile interaction. Crafted with a black fibreglass rear panel and a silver aluminium frame with precise knurling, the device echoes the aesthetic language of classic Leica cameras.

A distinctive mechanical camera ring surrounding the multi-camera module allows users to physically control settings such as zoom, ISO, exposure value and shutter speed. This intuitive interface transforms the smartphone into a tool that feels closer to a traditional camera, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to thoughtful image-making.

The device is finished in Leica’s signature black-and-silver palette and sealed with the iconic red dot logo—a symbol synonymous with photographic excellence.

Technology shaping the future of mobile photography

Beyond hardware, the Leica Leitzphone Powered by Xiaomi integrates advanced software and image authentication technology. The smartphone supports the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), embedding cryptographically secured metadata into original images to verify authorship and protect digital content.

By combining Leica’s expertise in optics, colour science and image aesthetics with Xiaomi’s high-performance mobile platform, the Leitzphone represents a new vision for photography in the digital age. More than simply a premium device, it positions the smartphone as a serious creative tool—one that brings the language of professional photography into everyday life.
