A unique exhibition celebrating the extraordinary career of model Naomi Campbell opens today. The show, entitled NAOMI: In Fashion, will be held at the V&A Museum and will be dedicated to Campbell’s creative collaborations and cultural impact.
Beginning with her discovery at the age of 15, the exhibition highlights her rise, including her historic cover of Paris Vogue at the age of 18. Produced in collaboration with Campbell, the exhibition brings her voice and perspective to the fore. It features her extensive wardrobe of haute couture and ready-to-wear ensembles from key moments in her career, as well as loans from the designer’s archives and objects from the V&A’s collections.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is the Becoming Naomi section, which features striking clips of Campbell’s legendary catwalk walk and explores her early dance training. The Supermodel part showcases Campbell’s contributions to the fashion industry, including her work with leading designers such as John Galliano, Gianni Versace and Karl Lagerfeld. Another important section focuses on her close relationship with the late designer Azzedine Alaïa, who used Campbell’s sculptural figure to inspire much of his work.
A variety of themed parts highlight different aspects of Campbell’s career and life. New York explores her early days in the city’s vibrant fashion scene, while The Spotlight examines her high-profile biographical moments, including her period of court-ordered community service. Exemplar focuses on her long-term collaborations with fashion houses such as Dolce & Gabbana and Vivienne Westwood, and Alchemy. Curated by Edward Enninful OBE, Alchemy showcases Campbell’s unique chemistry with the camera through the work of renowned photographers including Steven Meisel and Patrick Demarchelier.
