Nature and Fashion in Symbiosis

Nature and Fashion in Symbiosis

Mengyan Guo presents TeaFab, an innovative fashion concept made from discarded tea leaves, showcasing the symbiotic relationship between nature and fashion. Through meticulous experimentation, Guo blends discarded tea leaves with biodegradable glue to create a durable and eco-friendly fabric.

Inspired by nature’s forms, TeaFab’s sculptural design mimics the veins and shapes of tea leaves, trees and insects, creating a harmonious fusion of organic and man-made elements. The garments feature intricate details such as tea leaf collars and insect-inspired embellishments, highlighting Guo’s commitment to incorporating natural motifs into her designs. In addition, Guo uses the antioxidant properties of tea leaves to produce organic leather, ensuring durability and longevity in her creations.

Despite challenges such as potential mould growth in humid environments, Guo remains steadfast in her pursuit of sustainable fashion. TeaFab is a testament to her commitment to environmental awareness and innovation.

Part of the Super Green project at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, TeaFab represents a forward-thinking approach to fashion design that emphasises the importance of reusing discarded materials. Guo’s work not only showcases her creativity but also serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness between humanity, nature and fashion.
