The theme for the 2025 The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Costume Institute exhibition has been announced as Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. The exhibition will open to the public on May 10th, 2025, and will run through October 26th, 2025. This showcase will explore the historical and cultural significance of the Black dandy, tracing its origins from 18th-century Enlightenment Europe to modern-day interpretations across the globe.

Curated by Monica L. Miller and inspired by her book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibition will delve into how Black individuals have used fashion to express identity and redefine social narratives. The Black dandy, historically a man known for his meticulous and stylish appearance, subverted traditional expectations and used clothing as a form of resistance and self-expression.

Through garments, accessories, photographs, paintings, and more, the exhibit will illustrate the enduring impact of dandyism on Black identity across time and continents. The Met Gala, scheduled for May 5th, 2025, will celebrate this exhibition with co-chairs including Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Anna Wintour. Proceeds from the event will support The Costume Institute’s exhibitions and operations.
