The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam will present a major exhibition of the late Erwin Olaf’s work from October 11th, 2025, through February 2026. This marks the first retrospective of the Dutch photographer’s work in his home country since his unexpected passing in 2023. Organized in collaboration with Studio Erwin Olaf, the exhibition will showcase both iconic and previously unseen pieces from his career. Among the featured works is Self-Portrait with Lungs (2023), a haunting piece created during Olaf’s battle with illness. The exhibition will also delve into his exploration of subversive and activist themes, including his long-standing advocacy for equal rights.
Olaf’s work often challenged social norms, portraying subjects such as elderly individuals, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community with dignity and power. In addition to his more celebrated staged photography, the exhibition will highlight lesser-known, rawer works, reflecting his deep commitment to freedom of expression. The museum aims to show Olaf’s connection to diverse fields like art, reportage, and advertising, revealing the full range of his creative output. Rein Wolfs, director of the Stedelijk, emphasized the importance of celebrating Olaf’s fearless approach and the harmony of his values with the museum’s mission.
