Textile Waste Overflow

Textile Waste Overflow

Ilaria Marzano’s installation Back To Square One presents the overflow of textile waste from Accra in iconic city settings such as New York and Paris, highlighting the impact of Western clothing disposal. Using textile maps and AI imagery, Marzano vividly captures this scenario and offers a poignant critique of the global impact of the fashion industry.

On display at Info+ 2023 in Edinburgh, Marzano’s work includes city maps of New York, Paris and Milan made from recycled cotton canvases, demonstrating the widespread presence of textile waste. An accompanying AI-generated video illustrates dystopian scenes amidst the waste crisis. Drawing inspiration from Accra’s textile waste problem, Marzano’s installation highlights the unsustainable cycle driven by the disposal of Western clothes and underlines the urgency of sustainable fashion practices and waste management solutions.
