The Blue Dialogue

The Blue Dialogue

At Expo 2025 Osaka, the Portugal Pavilion, designed by acclaimed architect Kengo Kuma, brings to life the theme Ocean: The Blue Dialogue, celebrating Portugal’s deep connection to the sea and its commitment to sustainability. Located in the Empowering Lives area, the pavilion’s striking design features suspended ropes and recycled nets that evoke the fluidity of ocean waves, creating an interplay of light and shadow while emphasizing eco-friendly materials and circular economy principles. The upper section of the structure appears to float, offering a powerful metaphor for Portugal’s historic and evolving relationship with the ocean.

Inside, the pavilion spans 1,837 square meters and is divided into two immersive sections. The first, Sharing Knowledge, highlights the 500-year maritime connection between Portugal and Japan through historical artifacts, artistic works, and interactive exhibits showcasing innovations in ocean sustainability. The second section, Partnering for a Sustainable Future, immerses visitors in a multimedia experience that envisions harmony between humanity and the ocean, encouraging dialogue on marine conservation and global environmental challenges.

Beyond exhibitions, the pavilion houses a Portuguese restaurant, a retail space, and a multi-purpose venue for cultural and business events, promoting Portugal’s blue economy, gastronomy, and tourism. Commissioner-General Joana Gomes Cardoso notes that the pavilion reflects “a Blue Dialogue of science, environment, economy, art, and culture,” emphasizing the ocean as a unifying force. With its fluid design and thoughtful programming, the Portugal Pavilion stands as both an architectural marvel and a call for collective action to protect our shared blue planet.
