Sotheby’s Photographs has unveiled a captivating new exhibition in collaboration with Erik Madigan Heck, featuring works from his latest monograph, The Tapestry. On display at Sotheby’s New Bond Street galleries, the exhibition presents a striking collection of twenty-one photographs, six paintings, and a mural-sized tapestry.
The Tapestry is a deep exploration of color and form, born from a period of reflection and artistic growth for Heck. Inspired by historical tapestries and both Impressionist and Contemporary art, Heck reinterprets his past work by re-coloring, cropping, and re-imagining his photographs. The global pandemic provided him with a unique opportunity to expand his creative practice, blending photography with other artistic media.
Heck’s innovative process includes photographing details of historic paintings, re-coloring them, and then printing these results on canvas before applying additional paint. This technique merges photography with painting, pushing the boundaries of traditional photography and showcasing a dynamic interplay of landscape, fashion, still life, portraiture, and abstraction.
The exhibition highlights Heck’s signature elegance and vibrancy, reflecting his ability to seamlessly integrate various artistic disciplines. Influenced by his mother, a painter who nurtured his early artistic development, Heck’s work continues to be deeply intertwined with his passion for painting.
The exhibition, running through September 26th, 2024, offers a profound look into Heck’s artistic evolution and his innovative fusion of photography with other art forms.
