Wayne McGregor’s latest work, Deepstaria, is set to make its highly anticipated UK premiere at Sadler’s Wells from February 27th to March 2nd. Inspired by a mysterious deep-sea jellyfish, the production explores themes of perception, the unknown, and mortality through pure movement and sound. McGregor creates a disorienting stage environment using Vantablack Vision® technology, plunging audiences into an almost infinite darkness.
The choreography unfolds against an ever-shifting soundscape by Oscar-winning sound designer Nicolas Becker and producer LEXX, crafted in real-time with the revolutionary Bronze AI system. Costumes by Ilaria Martello, a specialist from The Royal Ballet, add a striking visual dimension to the performance. The set, designed by Benjamin Males and Theresa Baumgartner, enhances the sense of depth and fluidity with a reflective silver stage.
Deepstaria had its world premiere at Montpellier Danse in June 2024, followed by performances in Spoleto and Hong Kong. The UK premiere will feature a special post-show talk with McGregor and Sadler’s Wells Artistic Director Alistair Spalding. Following its London debut, the production will continue touring internationally over the next four years.
