The Palais Galliera de la Mode presents a retrospective of Paolo Roversi’s work, covering 50 years of his photographic career and his unique contribution to the world of fashion. This is the first Paris-based monograph on Roversi.
Born in Italy but based in Paris since 1973, Roversi has collaborated with renowned fashion magazines such as Vogue France and Vogue Italia. He has captured the essence of top designers such as Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo. His distinctive style is instantly recognizable. It is characterized by soft, sepia-toned images shot in natural light.
Using large format cameras and Polaroid, Roversi has developed his aesthetic over the years, embracing chance and accident as opportunities for artistic development. The exhibition features 140 works, including never-before-seen images and archival material, which provide an insight into Roversi’s artistic journey.
The project at Palais Galliera reimagines the space while honoring its nineteenth-century architecture, providing a fresh perspective on Paolo Roversi’s work. Lighting plays a pivotal role, with artificial light sculpting images dynamically and natural light capturing the essence of the present. The exhibition layout reflects Roversi’s minimalist approach, using lightweight structures and recyclable materials to minimize environmental impact. Through poetic scenography, visitors are invited to explore Roversi’s studio, where shadows and light meet to reveal his timeless quest for beauty.
The exhibition runs from 16 March to 14 July 2024. To find out more, visit the Palais Galliera de la Mode website.
