Bridging history and modernity

Liverpool’s historic Canning Dock is undergoing a major £15 million project, led by Asif Khan Studio and artist Theaster Gates, to rejuvenate the area and bring public access to the fore. The South Dry Dock will be opened to the public for the first time. It will offer a new perspective on Liverpool’s maritime heritage.

Plans for an experimental pavilion and a pedestrian bridge linking Canning Dock to the Royal Albert Dock will enhance the public realm. Architects David Adjaye and Mariam Kamara are also involved in this initiative. The pavilion’s concept, inspired by the history of the two dry docks at Canning Dock, features a sunken pyramid form with a perforated exterior, designed by Khan and Gates to offer a light-filled space for contemplation and education, aligning with the dock’s edges. Additionally, public realm improvements will include flat walkways, an outdoor events space, and enhanced interpretation of historic elements, creating a dynamic destination celebrating Liverpool’s heritage and fostering community engagement.

Theaster Gates’ involvement adds an artistic dimension, ensuring the project reflects Liverpool’s intricate history. Government support aims to stimulate the city’s development and rejuvenation.
