Artistic Provocation

Gagosian presents Sunday, Maurizio Cattelan’s first solo exhibition in more than two decades, marking his first appearance at the gallery. Curated by Francesco Bonami, the show challenges the complexities of American society and culture, addressing global issues through thought-provoking art.

With a new installation titled Sunday (2024), Cattelan uses precious metals to dismantle societal perceptions regarding the accessibility of firearms, juxtaposing privilege and vulnerability. The focal point of the exhibition, a towering wall adorned with gilded panels pierced by gunfire, confronts visitors on arrival, accompanied by November (2024), a marble fountain depicting a reclining figure urinating – a poignant reflection on social exclusion. Inspired by Cattelan’s Catholic upbringing, the lavish compositions blur the boundaries between art history and contemporary reality, evoking both reflection and unease.
