From creation to influence

Fondation Louis Vuitton, in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York and SMK – Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, presents Matisse: The Red Studio exhibition. The show focuses on the creation and history of Matisse’s famous 1911 studio, one of MoMA’s most emblematic works since its acquisition in 1949.

The exhibition brings together for the first time the works shown in The Red Studio since their departure from Matisse’s studio in Issy-les-Moulineaux. Created between 1898 and 1911, they range from well-known paintings such as Young Sailor (II) (1906) – exhibited in France for the first time in 31 years – to lesser-known works such as Corsica, The Old Mill (1898) and objects whose provenance has only recently been discovered. Three of these, Bathing (1907), Le Luxe (II) (1907-08) and Nude with a White Shawl (1909), are part of a significant Matisse collection held by the SMK, while the 1907 ceramic platter in the foreground is from the MoMA collection. The exhibition also includes archival material and related paintings and drawings.

The exhibition at the Fondation will emphasize the conversation between Matisse’s The Red Studio from 1911 and The Large Red Interior from 1948. It showcases Matisse’s reinterpretation of his earlier work during a transformative period spanning almost four decades. These two paintings then embark on separate yet interconnected journeys, influencing numerous artists in America and Europe. The Matisse: The Red Studio exhibition runs from April 25th to October 27th, 2024.
