The Palais de Tokyo will host a celebration of modern craftsmanship with the presentation of the 30 works selected for the shortlist of the LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize. The exhibition A Celebration of Craft will run from May 15th to June 9th, 2024.
The winner of the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2024 was announced yesterday. It is Mexican ceramicist Andrés Anza for his captivating piece I only know what I have seen, praised for its fusion of figurative and abstract elements. Awarded with 50,000 euros, Anza’s work exemplifies the spirit of artistic vision and innovation that drives the future of craft.
The jury awarded three ‘special mentions’ to exceptional artists whose talents stood out in a unique way. Miki Asai from Japan captivated with her intricate jewellery adorned with miniature vessels of delicate egg and shell fragments. Heechan Kim from the Republic of Korea impressed with his bulbous creation #16, skilfully crafted from manipulated strips of ash, showcasing innovative design techniques. Emmanuel Boos from France was recognised for his functional yet artistic table. Made from 98 porcelain bricks that can be lifted individually, it demonstrates a fresh perspective on furniture design.
The A Celebration of Craft exhibition features works selected from over 3,900 submissions worldwide that redefine traditional craft by using materials such as rubber tyres and compressed wood to create innovative pieces. Representing 16 countries, the finalists span a range of media including ceramics, woodwork, textiles, furniture and more, demonstrating the breadth of contemporary craft.
