Back in the Dazed

A new exhibition by renowned photographer Rankin, Back in the Dazed, offers a compelling look at one photographer and one magazine across a memorable decade. Featuring iconic celebrities, musical icons and the world’s top supermodels, the retrospective showcases Rankin’s iconic editorial shots from the 1990s. As co-founder and first photographic editor of Dazed & Confused, Rankin’s distinctive visual style helped launch the magazine and define the aesthetic of British youth culture.

Throughout the 1990s, Rankin shot over 200 influential editorials, creating a visual manifesto that made powerful political and social statements through his camera lens. Known for his bold depictions of LGBTQIA+ communities, working-class youth and Brit-pop bands, his work captured the essence of the decade. Rankin’s photography democratised high culture, giving ordinary teenagers a voice and access to contemporary art and experimental music.

Back in the Dazed is the first UK retrospective of Rankin’s groundbreaking work, curated by Ellen Stone. The exhibition opens today at 180 The Strand and runs until June 23th, 2024. For more details, visit the 180 The Strand website.
