Marc Quinn has long been fascinated by the connections between nature and humanity. His new exhibition Light into Life brings this complex relationship to life. The project, which takes place at Kew Gardens, features 17 stunning sculptures in stainless steel and bronze, scattered throughout the Gardens and in the Temperate House. In addition, Quinn’s new and existing paintings, drawings, sculptures and evocative frozen works are on display in the Shirley Sherwood Gallery.
The reflective effect of many of the stainless steel sculptures encourages viewers to see themselves as part of the artwork and the landscape. This exhibition is not only a visual feast but also an opportunity to learn about the essential role that plants play in human life. Quinn has worked closely with scientists and horticulturists at Kew, using significant plants from their collections to inspire his work. Highlights include the colossal Event Horizon (Sabal), a delicate sculpture of a palm tree towering over the Palm House pond, and the Singularity series of mirrored portraits of palm leaves. There are also five orchid sculptures, four in stainless steel and one in striking red-painted bronze.
The exhibition runs throughout the summer and invites visitors to explore the profound connection between nature and humanity through Quinn’s artistic lens.
