At 3 Days of Design, Danish designer Kasper Kyster presented his new collection Crafting Plastic. The line features furniture made by hand bending two-millimetre-thick PETG plastic sheets. Kyster heats the plastic to shape it into different pieces, such as stools, chairs, a large shelf, a wardrobe and two lamps. The design of each piece is determined by the properties of the material, which he makes as round and strong as possible.
Kyster’s focus was on making the furniture archetypal, ensuring that the form clearly indicates its function. The lighting designs in the collection are more sculptural due to the unique bending required to function as lights. Kyster described Crafting Plastic as a transformation from the industrial to the organic, showing how plastic can be used in an artisanal way. The plastic used in the collection contains 30 per cent recycled material, the highest percentage currently possible without compromising structural integrity. Kyster’s designs emphasise materiality and process, encouraging the viewer to appreciate the craftsmanship involved.
