Visualising a dream through photography

Visualising a dream through photography

The exhibition Tyler Mitchell: Idyllic Space will be on view at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta from June 21st to October 27th, 2024. The exhibition features the work of Tyler Mitchell, an American photographer and filmmaker known for his portrayals of black self-determination and empowerment. The project concept revolves around themes of family, play, community and domestic spaces, drawing inspiration from the landscapes and communities of suburban Atlanta where Mitchell grew up.

Works on display include Ancestors, which depicts a mother and daughter in an intimate moment, and Albany, Georgia, which captures different age groups enjoying a day in the dunes. Another notable piece is The Hewitt Family, a reflective work on mirror. The exhibition also includes a new photo-sculptural work and examples of Mitchell’s fashion photography, including images shot for Vogue and Louis Vuitton. His work often explores style, beauty and identity, seamlessly integrating his fashion and conceptual photography.

Tyler Mitchell rose to global prominence in 2018 when he photographed Beyoncé for Vogue, becoming the first black artist to shoot the magazine’s cover in its history.  Mitchell’s unique method is characterised by his use of vibrant colours and natural light to convey scenes of love and leisure, often reflecting his own experiences growing up in Atlanta. This exhibition is a homecoming for the artist, offering an intimate look at his journey and the themes that define his work.
