The illustrious career of British milliner Stephen Jones will celebrated in the exhibition Stephen Jones, Chapeaux d’Artiste at the Palais Galliera in Paris. From his first collections in the 1980s to his most recent creations, the show will elevate the hat to a work of art. The exhibition will explore Jones’ creative process, his sources of inspiration and his deep connection with Parisian fashion.
Born near Liverpool in 1957, Stephen Jones trained at Saint Martin’s School of Art and opened his first shop in London in 1980. He quickly made a name for himself, becoming a key figure in London’s New Romantic movement and collaborating with music and fashion icons. His journey into haute couture led to partnerships with renowned fashion houses including Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood.
Despite his behind-the-scenes role, Jones’ influence on fashion is undeniable, contributing to iconic collections for leading designers. The exhibition features nearly 400 works, including over 170 hats, preparatory drawings, photographs and complete ensembles. Highlights include his long-standing collaboration with Christian Dior, which demonstrates the creativity and daring that defined his career. Curator Miren Arzalluz notes that Jones’s time in Paris transformed his vision and made him the “most French” of English milliners.
The exhibition Stephen Jones, Chapeaux d’Artiste will run from October 19th, 2024 to March 16th, 2025. Visit the Palais Galliera website for more details.
