Highlighting the invisible borders

Highlighting the invisible borders

Sprüth Magers in Berlin is currently hosting an exhibition entitled Territory as part of the Gallery Weekend Berlin 2024. Curated by Shi-ne Oh, the group show features works by five prominent Asian women artists: Mire Lee, Liu Yujia, Gala Porras-Kim, Tan Jing and Zhang Ruyi. The project explores the complex definitions of borders and boundaries, and how they both restrict and liberate physical and psychological desires.

The artists have transformed the gallery spaces with works that explore the limits of the body, disgust, morality, language, history and memory. Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers express their excitement about presenting this exhibition, noting that it is the gallery’s first group show focusing exclusively on Asian women artists. They believe that the feminist slogan the personal is political resonates deeply with the exhibition’s theme, highlighting the invisible boundaries and borders that shape our lives.

Mire Lee, known for her visceral sculptures, describes her works as “extensions of semi-functional containers into sculptural bodies that are leaky and permeable”. Liu Yujia’s installations challenge the viewer’s senses with their unpredictable materials, while Gala Porras-Kim’s pieces address the constraints of language and historical memory. Tan Jing and Zhang Ruyi’s works explore philosophical questions of belonging and territoriality.

On view until July 27th, Territory is an immersive experience that engages and challenges the viewer.
