The Vinyl Factory has launched REVERB, a groundbreaking exhibition at 180 Studios celebrating the intersection of art and sound. The project is a retrospective of The Vinyl Factory’s collaborations with artists and musicians over the past two decades, highlighting its influence in fusing visual art with sonic experiences.
REVERB includes work by over 100 artists and musicians including Jeremy Deller, Carsten Nicolai and Virgil Abloh, with UK premieres by Kahlil Joseph, Stan Douglas and more. This immersive showcase also features new commissions from renowned artists including Theaster Gates, Es Devlin and Julianknxx, as well as Devon Turnbull’s Hi-Fi Listening Room Dream No.1.
A standout piece is Es Devlin’s Screenshare (2024), a cinema screen made up of 365 sketchbook pages that evolves as viewers are invited to take a page with them after an eight-minute film. The sketches, created over 35 years, offer an insight into Devlin’s creative process, with the film drawing on her installation works and featuring a soundtrack from her previous collaboration with Polyphonia. Read our interview with Es Devlin in the SS24 issue to find out more about her creative practice and work.
The exhibition also includes a meditative vinyl listening space called Hi-Fi Listening Room Dream No.1, curated by Devon Turnbull, which offers an immersive listening experience. The project transforms a place into a sanctuary for vinyl enthusiasts, with carefully selected records exploring different musical themes. Each session, led by a range of curators including Haseeb Iqbal, offers participants the chance to immerse themselves in unique soundscapes ranging from Blue Note jazz classics to rare Pakistani cinema vinyl. The events are aimed at encouraging deep listening and a shared appreciation of the artistry behind each record.
Running from now until January 14th, 2024, REVERB is a must-see for anyone interested in the future of multimedia art.
