Olafur Eliasson unveiled a new site-specific exhibition, Olafur Eliasson: OPEN, at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA on September 15th, 2024. Running through July 6th, 2025, this exhibition is part of the Getty Foundation’s PST Art: Art & Science Collide initiative. Known for his innovative use of light, color, and space, Eliasson will transform the MOCA space with a series of large-scale optical devices designed specifically for the museum’s architecture and the shifting atmosphere of Los Angeles.
The exhibition will feature over 25 works, including nine recent paintings and 18 light installations, 11 of which were commissioned for this show. A highlight of the exhibition is Pluriverse Assembly (2021), a mesmerizing light installation that creates an ever-changing array of shapes and colors through the reflection and refraction of light. Viewers will witness how two-dimensional light projections form three-dimensional illusions, engaging both perception and space.
Eliasson’s work encourages audiences to reflect on their relationship with the natural world, inviting them to reconsider their surroundings. His practice often incorporates elements of optical physics and natural phenomena, challenging conventional ways of seeing and experiencing art. The artist emphasizes the openness of interpretation, where each viewer’s perception creates a unique experience.
Johanna Burton, MOCA’s Director, noted that Eliasson’s work aligns with the museum’s focus on environmental awareness, as seen in their ongoing programming on climate change and sustainability. Eliasson’s installations invite visitors to become active participants in the artwork, exploring themes of perception, light, and nature.
