Homo sapiens sapiens

Instituto Inhotim unveiled Homo sapiens sapiens, an immersive video installation by Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist. This exhibition, displayed at Inhotim’s Galeria Fonte, forms part of the museum’s latest art program alongside new works by Rebeca Carapiá and Rivane Neuenschwander, each exploring themes of art, nature, and the human experience. Homo sapiens sapiens, originally exhibited at the 2005 Venice Biennale and now tailored for Inhotim’s space, invites visitors into a visually captivating experience, where video imagery covers the gallery’s ceiling, creating a sensory environment of color and texture.

Rist’s installation allows audiences to recline on beds and beanbags, encouraging full immersion as video sequences unfold above. Through this setup, the artist explores intersections between gender, the human body, and the cosmos, transforming the space into a meditative experience where themes like fantasy, humor, and desire are brought to life. Music, a crucial aspect of Rist’s work, accompanies the visual display, enhancing the sensory depth of the exhibit.

Curated by Douglas de Freitas and Lucas Menezes, Homo sapiens sapiens aims to dissolve boundaries between viewers and art, encouraging reflection on our connection to the universe. This multisensory installation highlights Rist’s renowned ability to create experiential narratives within exhibition spaces, drawing the audience into a dialogue about identity, imagination, and our place within a broader cosmic order.

Supported by Vale and other sponsors, this exhibition continues Inhotim’s tradition of presenting art that speaks to both individual and collective experiences within an intricate natural and cultural setting.
