Common Ground

Dries Van Noten’s Common Ground exhibition is now open at The Little House Gallery in Los Angeles, running from November 9th to December 14th, 2024. Curated by Brian Boa, the founder of Trading Places, the show explores the multifaceted concept of “home” through works by six contemporary artists, examining themes of identity, belonging, and security. The exhibition challenges viewers to consider what home means as both a physical and emotional space, often under threat or undergoing transformation.

The featured works include Prick by EFE, a concrete sculpture with metal reinforcements representing a young tree, symbolizing resilience and connection to one’s roots within urban landscapes. Martine Syms presents This is a Studio, a video installation depicting LAPD officers outside her studio, reflecting on the fragility of safe spaces. London-based artist Walid Labri contributes with a video piece that incorporates footage from a home burglary, raising questions about surveillance and personal vulnerability.

Collectively, these works invite a reflection on domestic life and how our surroundings shape identity and creativity. Common Ground seeks to ignite conversation about the intersections of personal spaces and societal pressures, bringing together art that challenges conventional notions of safety, belonging, and identity.
