Lucy Ellis has been announced as the winner of the inaugural Rabanne Arts Factory 2024 prize, celebrating groundbreaking innovation in digital image-making. This initiative by Rabanne sought to discover emerging artists redefining the boundaries of multimedia and contemporary art. After reviewing thousands of entries, an esteemed panel—including Julien Dossena, Jefferson Hack, Venus Lau, and Claude Adjil—selected Ellis for her inventive and thought-provoking work.
A recent Fine Art and Creative Computing graduate, Ellis specializes in experimental animation that merges found materials and digital textures to tell compelling stories. Her winning submission explored themes of “technophilia” and the complex relationship between humans and technology, using lo-fi animation techniques and VHS rendering to create a richly layered narrative. Inspired by Rabanne’s iconic designs, Ellis reflected on the obsolescence of digital devices, drawing parallels to artefacts and relics of modern life.
Judges praised Ellis for her originality, technical mastery, and critique of the digital age. Her work, described as a playful fusion of new and obsolete media, resonated deeply with the panel for its balance of cultural commentary and artistic innovation.
