teamLab’s newest project, Field of Wind, Rain, and Sun, transforms an industrial site in Higashi Osaka, Japan, into a dynamic grassland where nature and art intertwine. Adjacent to the Can Can Factory, this permanent installation series reimagines the relationship between art and its environment, allowing wind, rain, and sunlight to shape the artworks themselves. By emphasizing the concept of “environmental phenomena,” teamLab invites visitors to experience art as an ever-changing, ephemeral presence.
The installations activate under specific conditions: strong winds generate glowing patterns in the sky, rain on dark nights creates crystalline constellations, and sunlight at its peak produces a perfect circular rainbow. Pieces like Spatial Calligraphy of Light and Wind and Ephemeral Crystallized Rain reflect the fluid, transient nature of life, where energy and matter flow seamlessly. Other works, such as Sea of the Sun, repurpose discarded materials into radiant forms that shift with the time of day, illustrating the interplay between permanence and impermanence.
With its immersive approach, Field of Wind, Rain, and Sun blurs boundaries between art and ecology, urging visitors to consider their connection to the environment. Even a simple act, like sipping tea at A Cafe in the Field, becomes a performance, harmonizing with the surrounding installations. Through this innovative project, teamLab redefines art as a phenomenon that exists only in harmony with the world around it.
