Whispers began with a question: what is carried between generations without ever being spoken? It’s a pertinent ponderance for Chérif Douamba and Ottawa Kwami, who founded SIOH as a way of reframing African identity in “a world that often simplifies our stories.” Whispers is their most recent work. The short film observes two women, a grandmother and granddaughter, as they move through the same house. Their relationship lives in small gestures and routine of a home: pouring tea, folding fabric, sitting close in silence. “We approached the work with restraint. Natural light, shadow, and still compositions allow the domestic space to hold memory,” the pair explain. The film constructs a quiet architecture in which meaning is constructed by minutia and unvoiced inheritance. We see patterned curtains, the kitchen table, the figure of an angel. We hear muted words that resemble prayer through a closed door. The film has a rhythm that wears gently into the body, and this feeling tells a story about the subtle transmission of care.
