Art Basel Awards 2026 honour leading artists shaping the future of contemporary culture

Set to unfold in Basel this June, the Art Basel Awards 2026 return as a key barometer of contemporary practice, spotlighting artists, curators, and institutions shaping today’s cultural landscape. With celebrations spanning Art Basel and culminating at Art Basel Miami Beach in December, the programme pairs recognition with sustained support and global visibility.

This year’s cohort of 33 medalists reflects a distinctly international and cross-disciplinary outlook. Among them, Julie Mehretu anchors the Established Artist category, her layered paintings continuing to interrogate spatial politics and collective behaviour. (Don’t miss our conversation with Julie Mehretu, in which we discuss her work and the inspiration behind it.) She is joined by figures such as Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Arthur Jafa, and Theaster Gates (immerse yourself in our interview with Theaster Gates, in which he discusses creativity as a spiritual act).

Presented with BOSS, the awards operate as an evolving platform rather than a static accolade, foregrounding exchange across disciplines and geographies. The Cross-Disciplinary Creator category includes Kulapat Yantrasast, Laurie Anderson, and Sumayya Vally, while Emerging Artists such as Farah Al Qasimi and Precious Okoyomon reflect new directions in contemporary practice.

Curators and institutions remain integral, with contributors including Diana Campbell and the Diriyah Biennale Foundation. Gold Award winners will be announced in December, with funding supporting new commissions and public projects—positioning the awards as both recognition and catalyst for future production.
