Chiharu Shiota’s art installation, The Moment the Snow Melts, is on display at MUDEC – Museo delle Culture di Milano until September 20th, 2026. Created for the museum’s Agora, this monumental artwork transforms the central space with cascading white threads, exploring themes of memory, absence and the fragile connections that bind human lives together. The installation creates a poetic environment in which individual stories converge to form a collective meditation on time and connection.
A suspended snowfall made of threads, names and memories
In The Moment the Snow Melts, Chiharu Shiota transforms snow into a metaphor for relationships that appear, change, and fade away. Hundreds of white threads descend from the ceiling of MUDEC’s Agora, evoking a snowfall frozen in a fleeting instant.
Within this delicate network, handwritten notes and paper fragments carry the names of people who have passed through our lives but are no longer within reach. These traces of memory become symbols of invisible ties, continuing Shiota’s exploration of presence, absence, and human connection.
Visitors were invited to contribute personal thoughts, drawings, and memories that became part of the artwork itself. Through this collective gesture, the installation evolves into a shared archive of emotions and remembrance.
Chiharu Shiota’s reflection on connection, loss and renewal
Renowned for her large-scale thread installations, Chiharu Shiota explores memory, mortality, and human connections through delicate materials. In The Moment the Snow Melts, snow becomes a symbol of time’s passage and the shifting nature of relationships.
The threads trace invisible bonds between people, while suspended names evoke those who are no longer present, showing how memories survive beyond separation. For Shiota, melting snow is “the last echo” of a moment fading away — a poetic space where endings meet renewal.
From Japanese snow symbolism to contemporary art
The installation draws on Japanese traditions in which snow embodies purity, silence, and fleeting beauty. Shiota’s contemporary vision echoes historic winter landscapes, including ukiyo-e works by artists such as Hiroshige and Kunisada.
Curated by Sara Rizzo and created with the support of 24 ORE Cultura, The Moment the Snow Melts forms part of MUDEC’s programme for the Milan Cortina 2026 Cultural Olympics. Created specifically for the museum’s architecture, the work invites reflection on memory, separation, and the lasting marks left by human relationships.
