SELF™ opens at KRAMER in Paris from September 28th to October 1st, examining self-image, identity and contemporary visual culture amid the heightened atmosphere of Paris Fashion Week. Curated by Claire Koron Elat and Shelly Lea Reich, the four-day exhibition continues their investigation into how people consciously and unconsciously shape the selves they project to the world.
Former artistic directors of 032c Gallery, with Elat also having served as the magazine’s managing editor, the curators revisit ideas first explored through an earlier exhibition at 032c. SELF™ takes self-design and “productive narcissism” as its central themes, with Boris Groys’ essay Self-Design, or Productive Narcissism as a key point of departure. The project examines how identity is constructed, performed and positioned within visual culture, particularly where fashion, image-making and Paris intersect during Fashion Week.
The exhibition features works and contributions by F1LTHY, Kristoffer Borgli, Sonny Hall, Pouria Khojastehpay, Noémie Ninot and Yury Belyavskiy, with sound by F1LTHY. Their varied practices offer perspectives on image, persona, representation and self-positioning, expanding the discussion of identity in contemporary art beyond any single medium.
