Tilda Swinton announces ‘Material Evidence,’ an unconventional debut memoir

Tilda Swinton will publish her debut memoir, Material Evidence, in autumn 2028 through Farrar, Straus and Giroux (FSG). Defying the conventional shape of a life story, the Tilda Swinton book traces memory through objects, associations and sensory impressions instead of a chronological account.

A life told through things

Material Evidence moves from object to object, each opening a new path into Swinton’s personal history. Among them are a christening dress, a letter, a wooden leg, a sweatshirt, a length of embroidery silk and a photograph.

The structure reflects Swinton’s view of memory as an associative trail of fragments linked by feeling, curiosity and unexpected connections. The book considers how physical things preserve experiences, gather meaning and offer pathways into the past.

“Material Evidence is a book about curiosity,” Swinton says, calling it “an essay in wonder.” Her approach gives equal weight to the elusive nature of personality and the enduring presence of objects, suggesting that both shape the stories we tell about our lives.

The Tilda Swinton book marks her first publication with FSG and her debut memoir. It follows her 2025 art book Tilda Swinton: Ongoing, published by Rizzoli International Publications, which explored her film career, fashion and artistic collaborations.

Material Evidence is scheduled for global publication in autumn 2028, offering an intimate portrait of one of cinema’s most distinctive figures through the objects, memories and moments that have shaped her life.
